Coupled with Canon's proprietary DIGital Imaging Core (DIGIC) processor, PowerShot S70 delivers outstanding image resolution and color fidelity, fast and accurate AF and AE operations, while accelerating processing speed. Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space (iSAPS) is another technology that allows the three new digital cameras to deliver superb images. The scene focused on and shooting information are analysed and cross-referenced against Photographic Space. 7.1 Megapixel CCD
At the heart of the PowerShot S70 is a high-resolution 7.1 megapixel CCD with Bayer type primary colour filters with 7.1 megapixel effective for image creation. Information from the CCD is processed by Canon's proprietary DIGIC imaging processor, assuring sharp images with faithful colour reproduction, while accelerating processing speed.
New 28mm Lens with Wider View
PowerShot S70 features a 28mm wide-angle lens that increases the flexibility of shooting and allows buildings, trade-show exhibits and other large-scale subjects to be more easily captured. It's also great for group shots of family gatherings, or whenever shooting in a confined space.
3.6x Optical Zoom
The new 3.6x optical zoom lens covers the range from 28mm wide-angle to 100mm telephoto with the touch of the power zoom lever. PowerShot S70 equips with a Canon exclusive UA Lens (Ultra High Refractive Index Aspherical Lens), a glass-molded Aspherical lens with an ultra high refractive index that delivers bright, clear shots.
The ultra-high refractive index of the UA lens and the optimized power placement of the lens groups allow for a shorter total and retracted optical length, making for an extremely compact PowerShot S70's design even with the wide angle, broad range of angle of view, and high resolution.
Slim Exterior Design in Metallic Black
The stylish outlook in metallic black colour of the PowerShot S70 illustrates the trendy design of Canon's digital cameras. It is also 8% smaller in size than S50 and 12% lighter in weight, making it easier to handle and carry. A redesigned sliding lens cover protects the camera and lens and provides a Power On/Off function.
13 Shooting Modes
PowerShot S70 provides users with 13 shooting modes, including Auto, Tv, Av, M, C in the Auto, Creative Zone, and Portrait, Landscape, Night Scene, Flash Shutter, Slow Shutter, Stitch Assist, Movie in the Image Zone. By rotating the menu plate on the camera, users can freely capture their favorite images.
4cm Macro Function
A new and improved Macro function allows sharp focusing on objects as close as 4cm from the camera.
Wide Range of Optional Accessories
An optional new Waterproof Case WP-DC40 allows swimming or diving with the PowerShot S70 to a depth of 40 meters. An optional Telephoto Conversion Lens TC-DC10 with a Conversion Lens Adaptor LA-DC10 extends the maximum focal length of the optical zoom lens to 200mm. In addition, an optional Wireless Controller WL-DC100 allows remote shooting and playback of images on the PowerShot S70. The controller can be set for shutter release delays of 0 sec., 2 sec., and 10 sec., depending on user preference.
Reduced Start-up time
PowerShot S70's start-up time has been reduced, and all functions can be reset with a single touch. Other functional improvements include a larger zoom control lever, a new omni-selector with center-positioned SET button, and a new control button layout.
Three-minute Movie Mode
In addition to still photos, PowerShot S70 can record motion and sound VGA-size movies for up to 3 minutes' duration. In-camera editing of audio and video is possible using the built-in LCD screen and speaker.
9-Point AiAF
Easy to carry and easy to use, the PowerShot S70 has many features and functions including 9-point AiAF, single-point autofocus, full manual control of exposure and manual focus. Shutter speed range has been extended to 15 to 1/2000th second. Users can select from 4 quality modes plus RAW mode, the largest image size being 2592 x 1944 pixels. Simultaneous recording of RAW + JPEG images is possible, with the user being able to specify the embedded JPEG image size for the first time.
6 Different Scene Modes
The new PowerShot S70 features 6 kinds of photo effects for users to choose from. They are Vivid, Neutral, Low Sharpening, Sepia, Black & White, and Custom. With fabulous photo effects, every piece of photos will add a touch to unforgettable moments.
Underwater White Balance
The PowerShot S70 specially equips an unique "underwater" setting, which can automatically adjust its colour temperature for shooting in this bluish and variable environment. The wide range of AWB options also include TTL auto, Pre-set (Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Fluorescent High, Flash, Underwater), and Custom. There are 3 metering patterns, exposure compensation, and an Intelligent Orientation Senor for high precision AF, AE, AWB and automatic "heads-up" display of images on the bright 1.8-inch TFT LCD during playback and transfer.
Direct Print Mode and PictBridge™ Compatible
The PowerShot S70 likes all Canon digital cameras, features direct photo printing without a computer. It is compatible with all Canon direct photo printers, including the dye sublimation printers and Canon Bubble Jet Direct Photo Printers. The Print/Share button, which lights up blue when the three new digital cameras are connected to a CP Direct, BJ Direct or PictBridge compliant printer, indicates easy printing can be initiated by a simple press on the button to initiate printing. Via its bright, TFT LCD monitor, users can control all print functions, including photo selection, print quantity, bordered or borderless prints and even image cropping. They also ensure excellent digital imaging performance.
Direct Transfer (Windows* only) allows the user to send images to a computer simply by pressing the Print/Share button. Different types of transfer can be selected from the image transfer menu.
New Battery
The PowerShot S70 is supplied with a new, NB-2LH high-capacity rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 720mAh for increased shooting capacity on a single charge.
