Canon Lenses

A
photographic lens comprises several pieces of specially shaped sharp glass, known as elements, and several other components. Crafting of each lens element starts by cutting and grinding selected optical glass to obtain the desired surface curvature and a precise optical axis through the exact centre of the lens. The elements are then coated with a reflection-prevention film which is as thin as a single wavelength of light, and then assembled. Lens making is indeed a highly-complex process.

Prototypes are handmade at the trial production stage, then quality checked and evaluated for mass production potential. Canon's craftsmen and the grinding tools they use are crucial to the pre-production process and must be the very finest available. Key technicians must draw upon years of experience which gives them a veritable sixth sense when judging accuracy.

Drawing on a tradition of craftsmanship, Canon wants all its lens users to experience a world of new and constantly more exciting photographic possibilities. Hence, in this section, we invite you to explore the Canon Lens World, catch on the first Canon-made lens right up to the latest lens with a built-in image stabilizer.
