- Canon introduces the Auto Keratometer RK-1, designed to measure the eye's refractive power and corneal shape.

1987

- The EOS autofocus SLR system is introduced, along with a range of EF lenses.
- A 50x television zoom lens with the world's highest zoom ratio is introduced.

1988

- Canon Research Centre Europe Ltd. is established in the U.K.
- Canon introduces the RC-760, a still video camera with a built-in CCD giving a resolution of 600,000 pixels, a definition unmatched anywhere.

1989

- The EOS-I, a top-of-the-line autofocus SLR camera, is introduced.

1991

Canon introduces the LXI, an 8mm camcorder with interchangeable lenses conforming to the VL-mount standard.

1992

- The EOS5, the world's first eye-controlled autofocus camera, is introduced.
- Canon and the NHK Engineering Service Foundation jointly develop a high-speed camera conforming to the Hi-Vision format.

1994

- 35mm camera production passes the 80 million mark.
- The EOS- 1N is introduced.

1995

- After a 34-year hiatus, Canon reenters the binocular market with its 12 X 361S model, which compensates for hand-shake by incorporating Canon's original Vari-Angle Prism.
- The EOS-DCS3 digital camera series is released.
- A new first, the EF75-300mm f/4-1.6 IS USM image-stabilizing lens, is launched.

1996

- The ELPH, a 2x zoom compact camera for the Advanced Photo System, is released.
- The PowerShot 600 digital camera, an ultrahigh-quality digital camera with a 570,000-pixel CCD, is released.

1997

Sales commence for the EF300mm F4L IS image stabilization lens, providing excellent focusing of moving objects.
